INGREDIENT DETAILS
Salted Fish (1 pack, 200g): Typically made from cod or other white fish, salted fish adds a distinct savory flavor to the dish. The salting process preserves the fish and intensifies its taste, which is balanced by the fresh ingredients in the recipe.

  • Tomatoes (4 medium): Juicy and slightly tangy, tomatoes add freshness and moisture to the dish. They break down during cooking, creating a flavorful base that complements the salted fish.
  • Pimentos (2 medium-large, minced): These sweet peppers provide a mild heat and a burst of color. They enhance the dish’s flavor profile without overwhelming it, adding to the overall aroma and taste.
  • White Cabbage (1 ½ cups, chopped): Cabbage adds a crunchy texture and a slightly sweet flavor. It also absorbs the flavors of the other ingredients, making it a perfect complement to the dish.
  • Garlic (4 cloves, minced): Garlic infuses the dish with a rich, aromatic flavor. Its strong scent and taste enhance the overall profile, creating a delicious base when sautéed.
  • Onion (1 small, sliced): Onions add sweetness and depth to the dish. When cooked, they caramelize slightly, contributing to the dish’s savory notes and enhancing the overall aroma.
  • Hot Pepper (1 small piece, or to taste): This ingredient introduces heat and spice to the dish. Adjusting the amount allows you to control the spiciness according to your preference.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Wash the salted fish to remove some of the surface salt. Then, place the fish in a small saucepan of boiling water to further remove salt for approximately 10–15 minutes. Remove from hot water and rinse again. Set aside to cool.
  2. Once the saltfish has cooled, use a fork, knife, or your hands to shred and break down the salted fish.
  3. Add oil to a frying pan or saucepan over medium heat. Sauté the garlic, onion, pimento, and hot pepper for about 30 seconds or until fragrant.
  4. Add the tomatoes and cabbage, and sauté for another 2 minutes, tossing occasionally. Then, add the salted fish. Toss all the ingredients together until well incorporated, and cook on low heat for 5–6 minutes before removing from heat.
  5. This dish can be served immediately. If it’s lacking in salt, feel free to add your preferred amount. Serve with fried bakes, sada roti, coconut bake, etc.

Note

  • Soaking the Fish: If you prefer a less salty dish, soak the salted fish in water for a few hours or overnight before cooking. This will help to draw out more salt.
  • Shredding the Fish: Once the fish has cooled, use a fork, knife, or your hands to shred it into bite-sized pieces. Be careful to remove any bones you might find.
  • Adjusting Spice Levels: The heat from the hot pepper can vary, so taste as you go. Start with a small amount and add more if you prefer a spicier dish.
  • Vegetable Variations: Feel free to add other vegetables, such as bell peppers or scallions, for additional flavor and color.
  • Serving Suggestions: This dish pairs wonderfully with fried bakes, sada roti, or coconut bake. You can also serve it with avocado or a side of fried plantains for added richness.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
  • Make it Ahead: Salt Fish Buljol can be made ahead of time and reheated for a quick breakfast or brunch option.
